Daybreak: An Alternative Valentine Film
|
“Daybreak” is a cinematic opus which was filmed under the direction of Adolfo Alix, Jr. from a screenplay written by Charliebebs Gohetia. It brings together International Film Festival Stars: Coco Martin (of “Masahista” – Locarno Film Festival and “Tirador” – Cannes Film Festival) and Paolo Rivero (of “Live Show” – Berlin Film Festival). The movie encapsulates the story of two gay lovers who are on the brink of separation, and here is a short backgrounder on the movie: “William (Paolo Rivero), a pediatrician, and JP (Coco Martin), a local boatman / tour guide, spend the night in William’s resthouse in Taal trying to find words, answers, and tears to decide whether to break up or take their relationship to the next level – William, leaving his wife and finally living with JP. Unable to look at each other in the face, or break through the suffocating silence, these two talk for hours side by side, in no particular route.” “‘Daybreak’ invites the viewer to follow the characters in the supposed death-throes of their relationship, and their downward slide into a future beset by doubts and fears. Tears will however represent some initial relief to the lovers’ emotional paralysis, bringing an end to the oppressive silence between the couple – demonstrating that crying softens and liberates consciousness. Their final decision will clearly change their lives. William & JP allow us to know their biggest lies and biggest truths… two people loving each other, clinging to each other, betraying each other – trying the fragility of their feelings in only one night. Memories and dreams, truths and lies, fears and desires, honesty and betrayal, love and hate – they are all closely entwined in this night. Behind the veil of words, they become intimate – but will the light of sunrise bring this intimacy to an end?” (excerpts from the movie’s press release article). “Daybreak” will have a special screening on February 13-14, 2008 at the UP Cine Adarna (formerly known as UP Film Center). Its regular screening will start on February 20-26 at the Robinson’s Place IndieSine, then on February 26-March 4 at Robinson’s Place – Ermita, followed by its Robinson’s Bacolod run on March 5-11. |
