Charlston “Tong” Yam is an 18-year old part-time model from Caloocan City. He is a college sophomore at De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde taking up Export Management.

Tong was a chubby kid. He told me that his family loved to see him eat since they equated his being chubby to being healthy. However, when he was diagnosed with hypertension at a very young age, his family started to re-assess his condition. He was encouraged to go to the gym. What got him into working out is the fact that he wanted to lose weight due to health reasons.

His working out started to produce results. He was able to tone his muscles to a more shapely physique. While in school, the manager of one of his model schoolmates noticed him and told him to to get into modeling. To date, he has done a print ad for Happy Andrada’s clothing collection and ramp work for Edwin Uy’s intimate wear fashion show at the Manila Pavillion. He has also done an ushering job for Stradcom, a company into local distribution of Blackberry mobile phones.

One of his notable achievements as a model is making it as one of the finalists at the Bodyshots 2008 model search which was held earlier this year. He would have been the youngest contestant in Bodyshots since its inception, however, a family problem forced him to drop out of the competition. Nevertheless, the organizers told him that he could always re-audition for future runs of the search.
